TOP 10 FOOTBALL FANS IN EUROPE (UEFA SURVEY)
It has been said that the 12th man is like an endangered species in modern football.  This weekend I waxed un-poetically about the legacy of Liverpool fans and the famous atmosphere they create at Anfield and when they travel on the road.  But does this legacy give Anfield the title of Best Atmosphere in the EPL or is this simply a fabled tale that in reality can’t compete with the fans at Emirates, Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge?
THE NOMINEES ARE…

Anfield:  On the Kop, they are like Duracell Bunnies, they keep going and going and going….They sing.  They chant.  They never sit down.  It has been described as a “Scouse coliseum” of “noise, swaying scarves, songs and banners” and the closest thing football has to a “religious experience.”
Even players on Liverpool’s rival teams love it as Henry noted when transferring to Barcelona…
“It’s the atmosphere I love. It’s unbelievable.
“I’ve played in a lot of stadiums but for me there is nothing like playing at Liverpool.”
And Henry isn’t the only legend to pay tribute to the atmosphere at Anfield – Terry, Capello, Maradona, Pele and Cruyff have all noted the special relationships Liverpool fans have with their club.
Or at least fans who bought Liverpool tickets use to.  On European nights.  Or against one of the other clubs in the “Big Four.”  Or perhaps you think the current situation surrounding the club’s finances and owners has led to a more apathetic environment?

Emirates:  The Arsenal stadium has a reputation of being a bit quiet – but basing your vote solely on who screams the loudest would be a cop out.  Buying Arsenal tickets won’t guarantee you a afternoon of rambunctious, boisterous fun- but the atmosphere is often described as “nice and friendly” (with the notable exceptions of games involving the Spurs).  And while some have criticized Arsenal fans as being too quiet – even the players have noted that the fans are getting louder as Fabianski noted last Spring…
Against West Ham it was quite loud.  You could feel that straight away. I think the players reacted to that.
I’ve also heard if buy Arsenal tickets they have some decent pie there….

Old Trafford:  The reputation of the Old Trafford atmosphere has taken a bit of a beating the past few years with Sir Alex describing it as a “funeral” and supporters claiming the stadium had turned into a “police state.”  Some of the fan-organized protests against the ownership of the club, including boycotting purchasing of Manchester United tickets, may have also dampened the spirit of the club – but despite those challenges, its still considered one of the most intimidating stadiums in Europe.  After all, the fan noise from Stretford End was once found to be louder than a Jumbo Jet taking off.

Stamford Bridge:  In the 70s, Stamford Bridge had a reputation for being the home of some of the most “feared hooligans in the country” – its safe to say the fans who currently buy Chelsea tickets don’t have the same reputation.  Its an atmosphere that has been called “sedate” or “carefree“- but given the success of their team the past few years you can’t say the supporters at Stamford Bridge aren’t inspiring.  And some of the more positive developments at Chelsea indicate that the fans and the club’s management are able to work together in a cooperative fashion to improve the atmosphere – ensuring that the club and the club’s fans don’t end up at odds with each other!
So, I’m curious – of the historical “big four” in England – which atmosphere do you prefer?
