The surprising yet uncomfortable truth of Tutankhamen’s family history has been disclosed.

Simply known as an “old lady,” the 3,300-year-old mummy in the left picture was earlier assumed to be the mother of Tutankhamen by scientists. However, after performing DNA test and computerized tomography (CT) scan on 16 mummies including Tutankhamen, the international scientist and consultant group shockingly discovered the mummy is the grandmother of Tutankhamen and also the “mother of his parents,” Tiye who was wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III.

Tiye’s son Pharaoh Akhenaten who reformed the religion to make people worship the single god married his sister Nefertiti. The intermarried couple later gave birth to Tutankhamen, the 12th Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt.

Tutankhamen has become known to the world for gold crown, gold mask, and other valuable relics unearthed in his tomb, which is located in the Valley of the Kings on the west of the Nile, opposite to Luxor in Egypt. Also called “Gold Mask,” in the right photo, for his famous face sculpture in gold, Tutankhamen had been known as an elegant 19-year-old boy-king until the uncomfortable secret of his parents has been confirmed in high-tech test.

Ruining his former image, the new discovery further revealed he suffered from birth defects including cleft palate and clubfoot, the inheritances of the prohibited marriage of his parents. The young king unfortunately ended his life by malaria. (koreatimes)
