World Group, Play-Offs

AUSTRIA beats ISRAEL 3-2 Venue: Nokia Stadium, Tel Aviv, Israel (hard – indoors)
Austria won both singles rubbers on Sunday in Tel Aviv to come from 1-2 down against 2009 semi-finalist Israel and assure its place in the 2011 World Group. Jurgen Melzer was up first and forced a deciding fifth rubber as he crushed Israeli No.1 Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes. World No. 13 Melzer, who also won Austria’s first point of the tie on Thursday, hit 48 winners to 21 unforced errors and broke serve seven times from 14 opportunities.
"It was very important for me to win that first set, he had a lot of break chances, but somehow I got my head out of there and then breaking early and giving him the bagel in the second set it gave me much more confidence," said Melzer.
World No. 134 Martin Fischer then made his Davis Cup debut in style, coming from a set behind to defeat Harel Levy 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 in two hours and 14 minutes, clinching a 3-2 victory for the visiting nation. Austria has played in the World Group play-offs for the past eight years and will feature in the elite top tier of the ITF men’s team competition next year for the 15th time.
USA beats COLOMBIA 3-1 Venue: Plaza de Toros La Santamaria, Bogota, Colombia (clay – outdoors)
Mardy Fish battled past Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 8-6 in four hours and five minutes to retain the United States' place in the World Group. Giraldo earned a chance to serve out the match after breaking Fish to go up 6-5 in the decisive set, but lost the final three games against the 28-year-old American.
“All during the match, I told him to think about the sacrifice and hard work that he has put in over the 10 months,” said U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe. “And on that changeover [at 6-5], I said, keep believing.”
World No. 19 Fish, who has climbed more than 70 spots in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings spots since June, became the first American to win three points in a singles Davis Cup tie since Pete Sampras led the U.S. to the 1995 title. Fish defeated Alejandro Falla in five sets in the opening rubber Friday and teamed up with John Isner to win the doubles rubber Saturday. Rain prevented the fifth rubber from being played.
The United States, a 32-time Davis Cup winner, has been in the World Group every year since 1989.
SWEDEN beats ITALY 3-2
Venue: Sparbanken Lidkoping Arena, Lidkoping, Sweden (hard – indoors)
World No. 5 Robin Soderling clinched victory for Sweden over Italy with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Simone Bolelli on Sunday in Lidkoping. Seven-time champion Sweden will now feature in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group for the 11th straight year in 2011. The 26-year-old Soderling struck 23 aces and broke serve four times from six opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 38 minutes, improving to a 12-3 Davis Cup singles record.
“He played well, he served really well; but I was playing good today," reflected Soderling. "I think I have improved many things (in the past year), I’m serving better and I’m definitely moving better. I have good confidence. I’ve won a lot of matches lately against good players and it helped my confidence.”
Fabio Fognini closed the tie with a consolation victory for the visiting nation, defeating Andreas Vinciguerra 6-1, 6-3.
